How to measure a hardback book for book folding (in centimeters)
1. Measure the height
Close the book completely.
Use a ruler or tape measure to measure from the top edge to the bottom edge of the front cover.
Record this measurement in centimeters. Most book folding patterns require at least 21 cm in height.
How to count pages available for folding
Page numbers vs. sheets
Page numbers refer to one side of a sheet.
One physical sheet of paper has two numbered pages (front and back).
In book folding, we count sheets, not individual numbered pages.
Steps to count usable sheets
Open the book to the first numbered page you plan to use.
Many books have blank or introductory pages you might want to skip.Divide the last numbered page by two to find the number of sheets.
For example, if the last page is numbered 400, there are 200 sheets (400 divided by 2).Decide how many sheets you want to leave at the front and back.
Many people leave about 5 to 10 sheets at the beginning and end to help the book keep its shape and stand better.Subtract these from the total sheet count to get the number of sheets available for folding.
Example
Book height: 21 cm
Last page number: 400
Total sheets: 400 ÷ 2 = 200
Sheets left at front: 10
Sheets left at back: 10
Sheets available for folding: 200 – 20 = 180
